Wonderful Triumphant Walt Disney World Tribute

Gathering contents and time for the articles has been very harsh but better days will sure come ahead as I build up my draft folder anew.

In the mean time, I figured I could fill the gaps by sharing another one of my videos. This one is about the whole Walt Disney World resort, it was shot and edited in 2006.
Don’t mind our french ;)
WARNING : Side effects frequently include urgent need to go back.

Joyeux 14 Juillet !

Blogging shall resume soon.

Main Street Clarification

It’s not a comparing article about Main Street, this blog is too green to start such a tremendous endeavour as to comparing entire lands. I just recently realised something that deserves a little “mise au point”.

Everybody knows, everybody has read and seen that the Original Main Street building rows (lefthand and righthand) have been replicated in Hong Kong, those two only differ in color and texture but for the design and shape of the facades, the rows are the same. This has been heavily documented and critisized.
Tokyo has itself a very unique Main Street covered by a canopy like some huge european train station.
So Anaheim and Hong Kong have the same Main Street, as Tokyo got a roof on its one. Those are common facts.
But what’s the status for Orlando and Paris ?  If you are a sedentary Disney fan you have read that those are two very different Main Street. First they both have their own Town Square buildings (City Hall, Train Station etc…) and second while the first one is themed after the early century, the second one tends to come closer to the 20′s when motor engine where starting to populate city streets.
If you are a traveling Disney fan, then you’ve seen both and can swear that those two are as you had previously read totally different Main Street with not only different Town Square but very different rows as well.
  Well…They’re not.
Walking up Main Street, look lefthand starting with the Emporium all the way up to Casey’s Corner, those are the same set of buildings. Same for righthand but the two facade prior the West Center Street (now the Emporium 2001 expansion in Walt Disney World) are unique. Those two corners hold Main Street Motors in Paris to stress the automobile presence of the theme and Uptown Jewelers in Florida.
Look in the back of the pictures, facades are already the same.
Beside those corners and Town Square of course, Disneyland Paris Main Street rows are replicated after Walt Disney World’s. Even the texture are the same, only the colors change.
Look this sketch of the four Main Street blocks of Paris and Orlando : Darker areas are the replicated facades.
For 15 years I was under the imression (even after walking them both) that my homepark’s Main Street, just like Walt Disney World’s was unique in style et theme. I was disapointed to discover the contrary, but felt I had to share, here I am.
Still, for me and many others who haven’t noticed without any research, that’s still two very different Main Street USA with their own (and unique for both) Town Square which brought to the Kingdoms two wonderful kinds of City Hall, Main Street Station and others.

But it’s still a bummer to figure after all those years that there are not 4 Main Street sets as I previously thought but only 3 (and a very tiny half)…

3 Partners Statues

On november the 18th 1993, Disneyland lavishly inaugurated its newest addition. It was not an attraction, neither a restaurant or even a store but just a statue. Designed by former Imagineer Blaine Gibson, Partners was placed in the center of the hub where it still stands today.

The date was chosen to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Steamboat Willie, the first distributed Mickey Mouse short. Later on 2 other parks would receive it to mark a celebration. Walt Disney World got its Partners for its 1996 25th anniversary and Tokyo Disneyland for its 1998 15th. Though Orlando planted its partners in the center of its hub like Disneyland, Tokyo had it advande at the entrance of its hub.

There is a 4th version of the famous bronze couple but not in a Magic Kingdom.
Disneyland Paris opened one year before the event and therefore couldn’t have its Partners installed at opening, it actually never did. Only in 2002 when Disneyland Resort Paris’ second gate openned did it get its Partners at the entrance of Walt Disney Studios like DF recently explained in this brilliant article.

Hong Kong does’nt hold the Walt & Mickey homage in its Kingdom or Resort. It seems Asian people don’t feel so close to statue as we do. I’ll illustrate those words by the final picture were it is clear that in Tokyo, statues don’t hold the same reverence as in the west…

Thanks to DF for inspiring the idea of this note ;)

How much ?

How much is a day in a Kingdom ?

For a Magic Kingdom only (no hopping) and for one day. Adult/Child.
  • Disneyland Park : $66/56
  • Magic Kingdom Park : $71/60
  • Tokyo Disneyland Park : 5800Y/5000 ($54/45)
  • Le Parc Disneyland : 49€/41 ($76/64)
  • Hong Kong Disneyland Park : HK $350/250 ($45/32)
Note that both US park tend to have you stay longer and get a great ticket/day value. Same is for France. Euro Disney SCA try to have its average stay extended by offering up to 5 days tickets where passed 3 days, the ticket/day ratio gets very interesting.

In Asian Kingdoms though, things are not so idealistic.
Tokyo don’t even let you hopper unless you stay 3 days and only on your third day of visit can transfer from the parks. It means not matter what, you cannot hopper on your 2 first days. Beside every entry must be used consecutively to the first entry.
As for Hong Kong, they only offer one day tickets. Word is, not too many need to stay longer… But the truth is they want to sell their Annual Pass badly and this “only one day” policy make the Annual Pass a bargain if your stay only exceed two days.

Picture above shows the wonderful ticket booths welcoming guests underneath the Disneyland Hotel in Disneyland Paris.
Picture below the very first line of the Motherpark.

La Girafe Curieuse

Adventureland, in Paris is unique. Its inspiration doesn’t just come from the jungle environement commonly used in Kingdoms. This one takes a lot from a real continent : Africa. This store and its design is a real Disney jewel, but what many people don’t notice passing by this sandy outpost is the star itself : The Curious Giraffe.

She’s quietly ruminating right avove your head, while peeking inside this human store. The chewing effect still works perfectly !

It is located just left after you entered Adventureland. If you keep walking on the left you’ll get into the african side of the french Adventureland. The building has therefor also been put here to serve as a beacon of where you’re heading.
The stores sells plushes and clothes all themed around the desert and the jungle. The sign shown above reads “Everything for safaris”.
Oh, and now you know how the french spell giraffe.

How many Restaurants ?

How many snacks, fast food, and fine dining every Kingdom holds ? This many.

Disneyland :
  • Table Service & Buffet : 4
  • Counter Service : 11
  • Stands & Snacks : 6

Magic Kingdom
  • Table Service & Buffet : 5
  • Counter Service : 9
  • Stands & Snacks : 14

Tokyo Disneyland
  • Table Service & Buffet : 10
  • Counter Service: 13
  • Stands & Snacks : 13

Disneyland Paris
  • Table Service & Buffet : 6
  • Counter Service : 12
  • Stands & Snacks : 12

Hong Kong Disneyland
  • Table Service & Buffet : 2
  • Counter Service : 6
  • Stands & Snacks : 4
Undeniably, for its incredible amount of table service locations, Tokyo wins and Hong Kong well, bring some oreos, just in case.

At its opening Disneyland Paris bare many more table service restaurants. It was even marketed as a fine food heaven. But as the park grew more in debt, fine restaurants, one by one,  slowly turned into cheaper quickest dining experiences, letting “Le Royaume” catch up its US and Asian brothers on the counter service figure.

As for the quality and themeing of all those places… That’s for many other articles…

Note : Stands & Snacks numbers vary regularly, I tried not to include the very small stands rarely mentioned and constantly poping up in different places.

Disneyland in Video

This humble presention is a funky video montage I made of my 2007 visit to Disneyland. Share it if you like it :)

4 City Hall

Intrigued or annoyed, cheerful or disapointed, worried or hungry those are the states of mind guests are in steping in the 4 City Halls of the 5 Magic Kingdoms.

In every Magic Kingdoms, you find them on your left entering the park. In the oldest and youngest Kingdoms the City Halls are quiet the same. As many already know Hong Kong Disneyland Main Street replicates the design of the Motherpark and only differs by the texture and color used to garnish the buildings. Buildings are therefor the very same shape. The city hall is not even different in color, only the roof tiles differ from the original.

Now as for Walt Disney World’s, it is like its Main Street, more New England inspired but poor in colors. Quiet richer and bigger than Disneyland’s as well.
In Paris, the look is more a more general approach of American architecture : red bricks and slate shingle rooves. The one simiral to the American Pavillon in Epcot. The golden elements add some kind of refinement unique to this park along with the 4 sided clock bell tower. Orlando is the only other City Hall to give time to guests.
In Tokyo they don’t really have a City Hall, they have an information point called Main Street House. It is not a singled out building but mainly a store on the front side of the World Bazaar structure. I didn’t think it was relevant to this article.
Disney’s City Hall always fascinated me because they include in the Kingdom theme the idea of an administration that supervise the magic. They stand out on your left like the information and help anchor of your Kingdom.
Only in Disneyland and Walt Disney World can you have your picture taken with the mayor though, I’ve never seen that big belly in Paris.

Flavored Popcorn

One major thing to remember when visiting Tokyo Disneyland is that those popcorn stands clearly defining any Magic Kingdom offer a different kind of corn depending on their location.

In Tokyo Disneyland only can you find :
  • Black-Pepper popcorn
  • Curry popcorn
  • Honey popcorn (right by Pooh’s Hunny Hunt entrance)
  • Soda popcorn
  • Caramel popcorn

I heard about Coconut Popcorn by the Tiki Room but was not able to confirm that.

Note that Tokyo Disney Sea also proposes this treat, with even more flavors… But this is for you to find, I’ll just say there is capuccino and coconut for sure :D

I love Tokyo.
